Mark Heiser, CVE
I've been a theatre professional for over 40 years, principally in senior management positions in performing arts venues at Cal Performances UC Berkeley, the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, and most recently the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Reflecting on my own career path, one of my greatest pleasures has been the ability to see potential in people, to engage in powerful conversations about their career directions, and to experience the joy of seeing them go on to great things.
My approach to the mentor/coach relationship is deeply rooted in the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, which I have used throughout my career and personal life. Tao is often translated as the “way,” or “path.” Taoist principles include wu-wei, which is a way to think about strategy, the dualism of yin and yang, which seeks balance in all things, and the values of virtue (te), health (chi), and harmony.
Taoist philosophy is well suited as a tool for career coaching. Clients who have the power within themselves for success can sometimes be frustrated by the myriad challenges of just finding the right path. Water in a disturbed state is cloudy, while water in a settled state is clear. The role of the career coach is to help you find clarity.
I apply a balance of directive and non-directive coaching methods. My experience in the business of the performing arts will help guide your understanding of what your career options might be. But exploring your career options will be decidedly non-directive. I hope to engage you in open questions and deep dialogue about your passions, ambitions and goals, since this is something that must come from within you.
A stagehand I knew once remarked that some of his colleagues thought I was “the hobnail boot of management pressed on the tender throat of labor.” It was the highest compliment he could give me, because we both knew it wasn’t true. I care deeply about people, about the performing arts, and about the yin and yang of audience meeting artist in the theater. So if you are seeking a career coach, and it seems like I would be a good fit, reach out and we can get started on your future path.
